October 23 2014 Caucasus Business and Development Network organised a day of environmental action in South Ossetia. Volunteers from schools, businesses, local government representatives and NGOs joined forces to cleanse the creek by the river, where locals go to relax and have picnics. They wore CBDN T-shirts, to raise awareness about the organisers of the initiative and the work of the network in promoting cooperation.
The main aim of the action was to show the damage to the local environment as a result of careless disposal of bottles, food packaging and other materials. Through their team-work, volunteers demonstrated the need to take collective responsibility for the improvement of one’s surroundings. The engagement of schoolchildren showed the importance of raising environmental awareness at a young age.
The group began at 11 and worked until evening. Many passers-by were pleasantly surprised and praised the initiative for teaching children and adults about the need to care for one’s surroundings. By the end of the day, they had filled 30 huge sacks with rubbish, and the creek was clean!
Similar events will be held in other regions of the South Caucasus in the near future.
