Promoting cooperation between communities in Armenia and Turkey
Gyumri, Armenia, 31 May 2015: Peacebuilding organisation International Alert and the Caucasus Business and Development Network (CBDN) will present the results of their initiative ‘Recipes for peace’ at “Slavyanskiy Dvor” 246/1, Vardanants Square, Gyumri, Armenia on 31 of May 2015 from 14:00 to 16:00.
‘Recipes for peace’ was launched in August 2014 with the aim of promoting reconciliation between Gyumri communities in Armenia and Kars communities in Turkey through discovering and raising awareness of the resemblances in their culinary traditions. We believe that the process of preparing and sharing brings people together, giving them the opportunity to exchange traditions and techniques, and in doing so, strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation essential for peace.
At the event, guests and residents of Gyumri will have a unique opportunity to taste the dishes prepared by chefs and homemakers from Kars and Gyumri and learn the history of the recipes. The dishes will not just come from recipe books, but include recipes handed down by family members through the years, and collected by the project participants during the field visits to Gyumri in October 2014 and Kars in December 2014.
Turkish–Armenian relations have been soured by historical conflict, troubled political relations and Armenia’s ongoing conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorny Karabakh. As a result, the border between the two countries remains closed and communities across the border are isolated from one another. Negative stereotypes and the perpetuation of the ‘enemy’ image hamper prospects of reconciliation.
Caucasus Business and Development Network is a group of likeminded people engaging economic actors and business communities across the South Caucasus and Turkey in initiatives that build trust and mutual understanding. Our work is guided by a shared vision of an economically connected and cooperating, peaceful Caucasus. CBDN, founded in 2005, symbolises a model of peaceful and effective interaction in the region, and promotes economic cooperation. Find out more at: www.caucasusbusiness.net
