Beekeepers’ Regional Cross-Learning Trip to Kars

Beekeepers’ Regional Cross-Learning Trip to Kars

From 19th to 22nd of July 2012, CBDN organised a regional cross-learning trip of South Caucasus beekeepers to Kars, Turkey.  The trip was part of CBDN’s on-going work in this sector, which aims to promote and strengthen regional cooperation among beekeepers of various regions.

The idea of organising a cross-learning trip came out during the Gyumri-Kars business forum, where the beekeeping sector was one of the main areas of focus. Following the forum, CBDN met with various beekeepers across the region to do a needs assessment in order to define the areas of interest for the cross-learning trip.

As the result, the agenda of the cross-learning trip consisted of training on the treatment of the honey bee diseases, an information session on apitherapy and non-traditional methods of maintaining bees, as well as site visits to apiaries in Azat and Dikme villages and shops for beekeeping equipment.

The trip provided a good opportunity for the beekeepers to engage in professional dialogue, establish contacts with other beekeepers from across the region and learn more about beekeeping practices in Turkey. Various areas were highlighted for future cooperation, which include ways of increasing production, quality control of bee products, obtaining modern beekeeping equipment, organising future educational programmes and informational centres, to name the few.  As a next step, CBDN will be following up on these ideas.

The trip was generously supported by the United Kingdom Conflict Pool funding mechanism.
